Vaughn Lee "Von" Smith (born June 15, 1986) is an American Idol singer.
Life
Von Smith was born June 15, 1986 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Career
Smith gained some success via his YouTube videos which garnered him national attention. The video showing his performance of the Jennifer Hudson song "And I Am Telling You" went viral, leading to his appearance on The View on 27 February 2007. Soon thereafter he was offered, and eventually signed, a recording contract with Kon Live Distribution.
American Idol
Smith auditioned for Season 8 of American Idol in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 8, 2008. He passed the Hollywood weeks and made it to the top 36. There, he performed "You're All I Need to Get By" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell during the group 3 performance on March 3, 2009. He was eliminated on March 4, and was brought back to wild card performance on March 5. There, he performed "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" by Elton John, but was eliminated once again.
After American Idol
From August to October 2010, Von Smith appeared in the concert revue For the Record: Quentin Tarantino in Los Angeles. Thereafter, he starred in Show For the Record: John Hughes from November 2010 through January 2011. In 2012, Von Smith performed as Lady Gaga's opening act in Australia. He also performed as a guest vocalist for the cover band Postmodern Jukebox.
In 2014, Von Smith released his EP On to Something. In 2017, The Mystery of Mister V followed.
