Michaela Anne "MK" Nobilette (born August 20, 1993) also known as Emkay Spatt, is an American singer from San Francisco, California who finished in 10th place on Season 13 of American Idol. She also made history by being the first openly gay contestant to compete on the show.

Background[edit | edit source]

Adopted by a gay couple when she was a baby, MK grew up in San Francisco. She plays guitar and piano. Her musical influences include soul singer Allan Stone and the band Train. One of her earliest influences is the Disney animated musical The Little Mermaid.

MK was a college student when she decided to try out for the show.

American Idol[edit | edit source]

MK auditioned for the show in her hometown of San Francisco, singing "If I Were Your Woman" by Gladys Knight and the Pips. Impressed with her soulful vocals, the judges put her through to Hollywood, but when she got there, MK was faced with having to sing again in order to go completely through to Hollywood. Her "Hollywood or Home" performance wasn't aired. She did make it through and made the top 30 and then the top 13.

For "This Is Me" week, MK sang "Satisfaction" by Allan Stone. However, she ended up in the bottom 3 with Malaya Watson and Kristen O'Connor. MK, along with Malaya, avoided elimination.

For "Home" week, MK sang the popular Train song "Drops of Jupiter". While Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez both liked the performance, Harry Connick, Jr. wasn't so sure, even questioning MK on whether she wanted to be on the show or not. The public seeemed to feel the same way as MK was put in the bottom 3 for the second week in a row. However, she avoided elimination.

For "Songs from The Movies" week, MK took on the Garth Brooks version of  Bob Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" from the movie Hope Floats. The judges liked her performance, and she managed to avoid the bottom 3.

For "Billboard Top 10" week, MK took on "F**kin' Perfect" by Pink, which had previously been covered by Hollie Cavanagh of season 11. It got her a mixed response from the judges and ended up being her last as she was eliminated on March 20, 2014, finishing in 10th place.
