Kayla Mickelsen (born September 16, 1997)[1] was a contestant on Season 15 of American Idol.
Audition[]
Kayla auditioned in San Francisco.[2] She sang "Broadripple is Burning" by Margot & The Nuclear So-and-So's.[3][4] It is unknown precisely how the judges voted, but implied that at least two of the three said "yes", granting her a Golden Ticket and sending her to the next round.[4]
Hollywood Round[]
Kayla's first round a cappella performance was not televised. However, she was shown during the second part of Hollywood Week, singing "Renegades" by X Ambassadors—in a group with MacKenzie Bourg, Ashley Lilinoe, and Juno Rada.[5] Each member of the group, except for Ashley, advanced.[6] After her untelevised third round solo performance of "Safe and Sound" by Capital Cities,[7] she was placed into the third deliberation room,[7] where everyone within made it through to the Showcase Round. For her final solo performance, Kayla sang "Anything Could Happen" by Ellie Goulding.[8] (This was also untelevised, but viewable online via Vevo.) At the Final Judgment, the judges told her that she did not do enough to become a Top 24 semifinalist.[9]
