Perry first appeared in American Idol as a guest judge during Season 9 for the first day of the Los Angeles auditions. She even performed on the show wearing a cape with Adam Lambert's name on it, on the Top 3 results show of Season 8.

She was announced as a judge for Season 16 on ABC on May 16, 2017. The decision received some criticism due to reports of her earning possibly $25 million for the job.
