Audition[]
John auditioned in Nashville. He sang "Don't Rock the Jukebox" by Alan Jackson and "Goodbye Time" by Conway Twitty. All three judges voted "yes", sending him to the next round.
Hollywood Round[]
John's stay in Hollywood wasn't shown much, but after his untelevised Idol Arena performance, he was placed in the same holding room as Baylee Littrell, Victor Solomon, Kam'ron Smith, Crews Wright, Josh King, Nina Daig, Drew Ryn, Mattie Pruitt, Grayson Torrence, Penny Samar and Kyana Fanene among others, where it was revealed everyone did enough to advance to the Showstoppers round. At the Showstoppers round, he sang "In Color" by Jamey Johnson. It was revealed he did enough to advance to the Head to Heads. In the Head to Heads round, he was paired with Clara Rae and they sang "Until I Found You" by Stephen Sanchez. It was revealed that John had advanced and Clara had not.

John was shown in the second group of semifinalists. He sang "Callin' Baton Rouge" by Garth Brooks. He received enough votes to be considered "safe" for another week.
Top 20[]
John sang an original song called "Tell That Angel I Love Her". He received enough votes to become a Top 14 finalist. To celebrate, he sang "Neon Moon" by Brooks & Dunn.

John sang “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley. He received enough votes to be considered "safe".

John sang "I Told You So" by Randy Travis. He received enough votes to be considered "safe".

John sang "Almost There" by Anika Noni Rose (from The Princess and The Frog); and "Believe" by Brooks & Dunn. He received enough votes to be considered "safe".

John sang "The Bare Necessities" by Bruce Reitherman and Phil Harris from The Jungle Book; and "Rainbow Connection" by Jim Henson from The Muppet Movie. He received enough votes to be considered "safe".
Season 23 Finale[]
John sang "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)" by Toby Keith; "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver; and his coronation single, "Tell That Angel I Love Her". He received more votes than Breanna Nix, but not more votes than Jamal Roberts, making him the runner-up.
