Jeff was shown in a group named "Phoenix" along with Jermaine Sellers, Moorea Masa and Ben Honeycutt singing "Carry On, Wayward Son" by Kansas. The group initially had a fifth member, but she withdrew from the competition before the performance. He and Jermaine both advanced. After his final solo performance, he was placed in the same holding room as Casey James, Tim Urban, Tyler Grady, Andrew Garcia, Todrick Hall, Katie Stevens, Jermaine Sellers, Siobhan Magnus, Crystal Bowersox, Alex Lambert, Michael Lynche, Thaddeus Johnson, Tori Kelly and Lilly Scott. Everyone in his room advanced. At the judges' final deliberation, he was told he did not make the Top 24.
