"Going, Going, Gone" is the coronation song by Maddie Poppe, the winner of Season 16 of American Idol.

Background

The song was written by Mitch Allan, Julia Michaels, and Lindy Robbins. The original pop-folk version was produced by Allan; meanwhile, the acoustic rendition was produced by Jason Mater. Both recordings were released through Hollywood Records.

Performances

Maddie performed it for the first time, during Round 1 on the season's penultimate episode: Top 3 performance night.

After winning, Maddie performed the song at numerous talk shows, awards banquets, and a plethora of other events. Some of these stops include: Live with Kelly and Ryan, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Good Morning America, the 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards, Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade special, and more.

Maddie would also perform the song during the summer of 2018, throughout the Season 16 Tour stops—in which the rest of the Top 7, plus Season 8 winner Kris Allen, accompanied her.

The song reached #3 on iTunes. It also peaked at #13 on billboard's Digital Tracks chart.

Artistic Direction

Maddie expressed some dismay about the style and especially the vocal range of the song, describing it to be difficult to sing live. This compelled her to create the acoustic version. She elaborated that she didn't want "backing tracks" (namely overdubbing or multilayering) nor to be a "pop star"; and preferred to emulate female singer-songwriters, such as Brandi Carlile, Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michaelson, et al.

Trivia

• Host Ryan Seacrest noted that one of the songwriters, Julia Michaels, is a fellow Iowan native, just like Maddie—albeit from different locales.
• Michaels also wrote "Walk My Way", the coronation single for Brynn Cartelli, who won Season 14 of The Voice (USA) just one day after Maddie won Idol. The two winners would unite at the 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards, to present the Icon Award to Season 1 Idol winner Kelly Clarkson—–who happened to be Brynn's coach on Voice, and Kelly's first of several Team wins before she retired her chair.
  • Maddie would subsequently perform "Going, Going, Gone" after a tribute from Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Bobby Bones.
