Box Office and Critical Reception[]

From Justin to Kelly was a box office bomb, making only a little under $5 million, almost half of its budget of $12 million and opened at #11 at the box office on its opening weekend.

The film was panned by the critics, earning a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 14 out of 100 on Metacritic. The RT consensus reads: "A notorious stinker, From Justin to Kelly features banal songs, a witless plot, and non-existent chemistry between its American Idol-sanctioned leads".

The film received nine Golden Raspberry Awards, tying with the most awards during the 24th Annual Awards with Gigli. The nominations include Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Actor for Justin Guarini and Worst Actress for Kelly Clarkson. It won a special award called Governor's Award for Distinguished Under-Achievement in Choreography given to Travis Payne's choreography.

The following year, the Razzies named it the Worst Musical of the Past Twenty Five Years.

  • Kelly and Justin were contractually obligated to appear in the film. Clarkson admitted in a later interview that she thought the film was bad and only took part in it because of her obligation.[1] She even begged Simon Fuller to let her out of the contract of doing the film, but to no avail.
  • Justin Guarini's character's surname is "Bell", the same as his father's and Kelly's character's surname "Taylor" is the same as her stepfather.
  • The film originally held the record for the fastest time going from theatre to home video release, with 29 days.
