Fritz Hager (born November 3, 1999)[1] was a contestant on Season 20 of American Idol.

Audition[]

Fritz auditioned in Austin. He sang "Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi. Although Luke voted "no", Lionel and Katy voted "yes", sending him to the next round.

Hollywood Round[]

Fritz was shown in the "Indie-Folk" category of the Genre Challenge, in a group with Leah Marlene. He sang "Unsteady" by X Ambassadors. He was later shown in a duet with Leah called "Team Green". They sang "Locked Out of Heaven" by Bruno Mars. For his final solo performance, he performed an original song called "Inconsequential Love". Afterwards, the judges told him that he did enough to make the Top 24.

Top 24[]

Fritz appeared in Group 2 and sang "Waves" by Dean Lewis. He received enough votes to advance.

Top 20[]

Fritz sang "When the Party's Over" by Billie Eilish. He received enough votes to place in the Top 10, making him a finalist. To celebrate, he sang "Golden" by Harry Styles.

Top 14[]

Fritz sang "Let it Go" by James Bay. He received enough votes to be "safe" for another week.

Top 11[]

Fritz sang "Wonderwall" by Oasis, as chosen by Luke Bryan. He received enough votes to be "safe" for another week.

Top 10[]

Fritz sang "Go the Distance" from Hercules. He received enough votes to be "safe" for another week.

Top 7[]

Fritz sang an original song called "All My Friends" and another original song called "The Ocean". He received enough votes to be "safe" for another week. This week, both he and Noah Thompson were sequestered in their hotel rooms, due to testing positive from COVID-19. Although quarantined, Fritz's pre-taped dress rehearsal performances were utilized in lieu of live performances—while Noah sang live from his hotel room.

Top 5[]

Fritz sang "I Wanna Remember" by NEEDTOBREATHE ft. Carrie Underwood, and "Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer. He, alongside Nicolina, received the lowest number of votes this week, eliminating him from the competition.

Trivia[]

  • Fritz was inspired to audition by Phillip Phillips. Before his audition, Phillip appeared via videoconferencing to wish him luck. They met each other on the Top 20 performance night show, when Phillips guest performed.
  • For the Top 7 telecast, due to testing positive for COVID-19, American Idol used Fritz's rehearsal videos for voting consideration.
  • Fritz is tied with Jack Blocker for being the highest-placing contestant in the reboot seasons that got a "no" vote from one of the judges in the auditions.
