Caleb Lee Hutchinson (born March 2, 1999) was a contestant on Season 16 of American Idol.

Audition[edit | edit source]

Caleb auditioned in Savannah. He sang "If It Hadn't Been for Love" by The SteelDrivers. All three judges voted "yes", sending him to the next round.

Hollywood Round[edit | edit source]

Caleb was shown in the first televised Group of Ten along with Layla Spring, Alyssa Raghu and Trevor McBane. He advanced and although initially untelevised, was shown in a group with Maddie Poppe singing "Mama's Broken Heart" by Miranda Lambert and was later shown in the final Solo Round singing "Your Man" by Josh Turner. He made it to the Top 50 and during Showcase Round sang "I Was Wrong" by Chris Stapleton. Afterwards, during the Final Judgment, the judges told him he had made it to the Top 24.

Top 24[edit | edit source]

Caleb was shown in Group 2. He sang "Die a Happy Man" by Thomas Rhett and "Meant to Be" by Florida Georgia Line, ft. Bebe Rexha in a duet with Rexha. The judges deemed him good enough to become a Top 14 finalist.

Top 14[edit | edit source]

Caleb sang "Midnight Train to Memphis" by Chris Stapleton during the Live Show and "Gettin' You Home" by Chris Young during the Results Show. He was placed in the Top 6 in voting for that week, making him a Top 10 finalist.

Top 10[edit | edit source]

Caleb sang "You've Got a Friend in Me" by Randy Newman from the film Toy Story. He received enough votes to become a Top 7 finalist.

Top 7[edit | edit source]

Caleb sang "Amazed" by Lonestar and "When Doves Cry" by Prince. He received enough votes to become a Top 5 finalist.

Top 5[edit | edit source]

Caleb sang "So Small" by Carrie Underwood and "Stars in Alabama" by Jamey Johnson. He received enough votes to compete in the finale.

Season 16 Finale[edit | edit source]

Caleb sang "Johnny Cash Heart", "Don't Close Your Eyes" by Keith Whitley, and "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash. During the Finale, it was revealed that he received more votes than Gabby Barrett, but he did not receive more votes than Maddie Poppe, making him the runner-up.
