As Long As You Love Me is the coronation song and debut single for Season 13 American Idol winner Caleb Johnson. It was released after he had won the show on May 21, 2014.
Background[]
Written by Justin Hawkins of the British rock band The Darkness in 2010, this song was originally recorded by season 7 Idols South Africa runner-up Mark Haze and was included on his 2012 debut album Where Angels Fear to Fly. Kelly Clarkson had even been offered the song at one point but wasn't able to record it in time, resulting in the license being granted to Johnson, who recorded it as his potential winning single.
Performace[]
Johnson performed the song on Idol's final performance show on May 20, 2014. The judges enjoyed the performance, giving him praise despite Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. not mentioning whether they liked the song or not. Jennifer Lopez especially praised Johnson for giving it his all on the song.
Chart position[]
The single sold 10,000 copies in its first week, resulting in it debuting at number 41 on the Billboard Top Rock Songs chart and number 26 on the Rock Digital Songs chart. However, the song failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first Idol winner's single to do so.
